Mid 19th century, Philadelphia. The "Dictionary of National Biography" notes that David Paul Brown (1795 - 1872) of Girard St, Philadelphia was a poet and that his casual poetry sometimes appeared in the "Sunday Despatch". Some of his dramatic works were composed in verse. The solid gold, well decorated rectangular box with hinged lid has a simulated woven central panel of zig-zag design within a border of fruit and vinery. The bottom of the box decorated with scrolling grave vines. Inside the lid is engraved in the interior of the lid "David Paul Brown/from his affectionate Brother/Robert Eden Handy". Fine, "gentle" worn surface and very minor waviness to center panels of the box. No other issues noted, very good overall. 80.1 grams total weight.
