Circa 1710-20, probably Boston, Massachusetts. Pine with hardwood "onion" feet. Early red over original black painted surfaces. All original hardware, case drawers fitted with teardrop brasses and chased backplates. Fitted interior, case with graduated dovetailed drawers, the whole of properly proportioned child's scale. All hardware original. Excellent untouched condition, all elements original, expected old minor use imperfections. Very few true American child's slant front desks known to exist. Two early minor top of case repairs, one early drawer lip repair, all done prior to red paint application. Museum collection marking stamp appears on interior upper drawer. Provenance: Bequeathed to Historic Deerfield Museum, 1960 by Rowena Russell Potter (1880 - 1969), as part of Lucius D. Potter collection. Potter was a prominent cutlery manufacturer, in nearly Greenfield, Massachusetts. Decommissioned by Historic Deerfield in 2017.
