(1904) 28" Chopper lump barrels are engraved "J. Purdey & Sons. Audley House, South Audley Street, London." "Made of Sir Joseph Whitworth's Fluid - Pressed Steel" on narrow, swamped game rib. Barrel flats are stamped with London nitro proofs for 2-1/2" chambers. Bottoms of barrels are stamped "CHOKE" and with serial numbers. Barrel makers initials "WH" (Bill Hill) are on bottom of left barrel, Tube numbers "30349" and "30350" are on loop. A narrow sling loop is soldered to bottom rib. Case hardened, Beesley patent, self-opening sidelock action features automatic safety (SAFE inlaid in gold), bushed strikers, engraved arrowhead tumbler end cocking indicators, and double triggers (front articulated). (Case contains another set of triggers with finger blades that set much further back in trigger guard, possibly for winter use with gloved hand.) Action and lockplates are engraved with 90% coverage Purdey house style rose and scroll. "J. Purdey & Sons" is on each lockplate and "PURDEY'S" "PATENT" is on bottom of action. "1" is inlaid in silver on top lever, and rear portion of barrel rib, indicating gun is number "1" of a pair. "2" is on forend tip as forends were switched at some time in the past. Original trigger guard is of nicely shaped horn in German style. Serial number is engraved on steel extension of trigger plate forming tang. This was specially made to accommodate horn guard. Very nicely marbled and well figured dark European walnut straight grip buttstock measures 14" over checkered wood butt. Butt is fitted with engraved steel trap to receive removable counterweights to be installed to accommodate shift in balance when using alternate triggers. (These counterweights with their screws are in case, and are engraved "1" and "2".) Stock also features standard drop points, point pattern checkering at grip, and a sling loop on toe line matching that on barrels, as well as a silver oval engraved "BO". (Purdeys kindly informs that gun was delivered August 1904 to Mr. B. Oppenheimer, and that counterweights were to accommodate an additional set of 29" barrels. The different triggers alter the length of pull by about 1/8".) Splinter ejector forend with Anson release from gun "2" fits and functions well. Actioners initials "WN" (Wesley Nobbs) are on iron. Gun is housed in its original two gun oak and leather case with brass corners, and central round medallion engraved "B. O." Case is lined in scarlet cloth and has space for two guns with their 28" barrels, with another space for a set of 29" barrels. Case contains two piece walnut and brass cleaning rod with 6" handle along with brushes and Turks head, a narrow carrying sling, pair of Purdey marked snap caps, round unmarked oil bottle, red morocco wallet with cleaning brushes, large bone striker bottle with two sets of strikers and springs, another bone bottle with screws for attaching counterweights marked "1" and "2". One covered compartment contains the counterweights, also marked "1" and "2". Another compartment contains the accessory triggers. CONDITION: Very good to fine, as partially refinished. Barrels retain over 90% of an old re-black, lettering somewhat softened. Action has traces of case hardening color where protected, but is mostly silver to gray. Locks retain perhaps 10 - 15% original faded color. Stocks retain most of what appears to be their original finish with numerous marks and scratches, both light and heavy. Checkering and drop points worn. Ejector forend from gun no. "2" matches well. Bores are fine, a bit dirty, with evidence of a few raised dents, mostly in right barrel. Action is tight. Barrels are on face. Ejectors are strong and in time. A small chip of wood is missing from left side of forend at rear barrel channel. There is an incipient crack which appears stable behind left lockplate. Case leather is still relatively light in color with numerous scratches and marks. Straps are missing, handle is good. Lock loops are missing. Replaced latch does work. Interior cloth is fair to good with some insect damage, soiling, and rubs. Labels have been removed. Partitions are tight, one area near action of one gun has had a portion cut away. Accessories are generally good. A neat old Purdey gun that I'm sure would have many stories to tell. MGM 48
