"The Passing Seasons Depicted by Lionel Edwards" published by London Country Life LTD, circa 1927. This is copy number 178. "This edition is limited to 150 copies for sale at home, numbered 1 to 150, and 100 for sale abroad, numbered 151 to 250, making this copy in the later 100. This volume contains 18 full colored plates dispersed amongst the text. Average size of the plate images are 7" x 9-3/4", page size is 17" x 13-1/2". The first plate is titled "The First Snow" and is opposite the title page. The other plates are as follows: Plate 2: "The Water"; Plate 3: "The Mockers"; Plate 4: "Cub-Hunting"; Plate 5: "The Evening Rise"; Plate 6: "Where Bright Waters Meet"; Plate 7: "A May Morning"; Plate 8: "Cloudy June"; Plate 9: "School Days"; Plate 10: "The Great House"; Plate 11: "Pipe of Peace"; Plate 12: "Limestone Soil"; Plate 13: "An Irish Shore"; Plate: 14: "Sunshine and Showers"; Plate 15: "For Bampton Fair"; Plate 16: "A Glen of the Silver Birch"; Plate 17: "The Voice of the Highlands"; Plate 18: "Purple Heather". All plates are signed in pencil in the lower right. All plates are in very fine, unblemished condition with strong palette. Pages with overall light toning, binding intact but showing signs of separation. Book cover intact as is the spine, paper jacket with considerable discoloration, deterioration and damage due to age and wear. Provenance: From the Private Collection of a well-known Fine Art collector from Southern Maine. CORRECTION: Over his long career, Lionel Edwards was well known for his remarkable illustrations in various classics including Anna Sewall’s Black Beauty (published in 1946) and R.D. Blackmore’s “Lorna Doone” (published in 1954). Additionally, Edwards authored and illustrated close to 30 books . At the age of 19, Edwards was the youngest member of the London Sketch Club He became a member of the Royal Cambrian Academy of Art in 1926, and a member of the Royal Academy of Art in 1927 (Same year he publishing of “The Passing Seasons”).
