(1900) 28" Chopper lump barrels are engraved "Boss & Co 73 St James's Street London" on concave game rib. Tops of barrels are engraved "Sir Joseph Whitworth's" "Fluid Pressed Steel". Barrel flats are stamped with London nitro proofs for 2 - 1/2" chambers and with Whitworth Steel sheaf-of-wheat logos. Bottoms of barrels are stamped with serial numbers. Case hardened square backed action is of "round bodied" filing with fronts of lockplates blending into softened action bar, and rounded lockplates. Action features automatic safety (SAFE inlaid in gold), gold band tumbler end cocking indicators, and Boss's incomparable single trigger, in this case being selective with selector button on right lockplate (L and R in gold). Action is engraved in near full coverage Boss house style rose and scroll with delicately cut small scroll surrounding 18 rose bouquets, as most always done by Jack Sumner. "Boss & Co" is in scrolled ribands on each side, and "Boss's Patent" is on each side of action bar. Top lever and small bow single beaded trigger guard are blued, have matching scroll, and serial number is in relief on trigger guard tang. Very finely marbled and lightly fiddle figured European walnut straight grip buttstock measures 14" over serrated horn buttplate over 1/4" black spacer. Typical point pattern checkering is at grip, and a vacant silver oval is on swept toe line. Matching splinter Boss ejector forend has Anson release. Gun is housed in old leather case, lined in burgundy cloth. Old Boss & Co St. James's Street label is in lid along with new charge card with information for this gun. Case contains two piece beech and brass cleaning rod with mops and jag, and relatively new Boss marked square oil bottle and snap caps. CONDITION: Very good, as restored. Barrels retain nearly all of a fine quality re-black, engraving has been picked-up. Action retains most of an old re-hardening with thin watery color, engraving slightly softened. Stocks retain most of an old oil finish, possibly original with numerous light marks and a few dings. Some oil added as maintenance. Checkering is competently freshened. Bores are excellent. Action is tight. Barrels are on face (new hinge pin). Ejectors are strong and in time. Trigger works well. Case leather is still light, has a number of bumps and rubs. Straps and handle are good. Interior cloth is good to fine. Old label has been conserved, but is foxed, stained and wrinkled with some repair to creases. Accessories are excellent. MGM73.
