(ca 1946) Two pair of 26" Chopper lump barrels are differentiated by having "Choke" on rear lump of one set. Both sets are fitted with deeply swamped narrow game ribs engraved "J. Purdey & Sons Audley House. South Audley Street. London. England". Barrel flats are stamped with London nitro proofs for 2 - 1/2" chambers. Bottoms of barrels are stamped with serial numbers, "CHOKE", and barrel makers initials "J A" (James Aldous). Tube numbers "64815" and "64816" are on loop of "CHOKE" barrels, and "63201" and "63202" are on open barrels. Case hardened Beasley patent self-opening sidelock action has automatic safety (SAFE inlaid in gold), bushed strikers, raised rib tumbler end cocking indicators, and single non-selective trigger that appears to be of Boss 3 pull type with protruding pin on left side of firing blade. Action and lockplates are engraved with near full coverage Purdey house style rose and small scroll which on this gun are very nicely cut and shaded. "J. Purdey & Sons" is on each lockplate, and bottom of action is engraved "J. Purdey & Sons" "London" "England". Small bow trigger guard has open scroll on bow and serial number on tang. Newer straight grip buttstock of nicely marbled and feather figured dense European walnut measures 14 - 5/8" over checkered horn buttplate. Classic drop points are behind locks. Point pattern checkering is at grip. A vacant silver oval is on toe line. What appears to be original splinter ejector forend has Anson release. Actioners initials "MT" (Maurice Timbers) are on iron. Gun is housed in what appears to be original best oak and leather case with brass corners and round central medallion, with initials "J. W. W." embossed on small inset rectangular patch on top. Interior is lined in burgundy cloth and a gold embossed black leather Purdey label is in lid, along with newly printed charge card with information for this gun. Case has space for action and both sets of barrels, and contains 2 piece rosewood and brass cleaning rod with mop, jag and brush in covered compartment, relatively new Purdey marked snap caps and oil bottle, bone striker bottle with this guns serial number inked-on containing spare strikers. Also included are a turnscrew and striker key with ebonized handles, a brass Vaseline jar, as well as a pull through field cleaning kit., CONDITION: Excellent, as refurbished. Both sets of barrels retain over 90% London quality re-black with subsequent thinning and light scratches, mostly on open barrel set. Action retains 70 - 80% of what appears to be original case hardening color, considerably silvered on fences, and lightly on beads, fading around bottom. Lockplates retain 80 - 90% color. Newer high quality buttstock retains nearly all of its well done rubbed oil finish, checkering sharp. Forend retains nearly all of a matching oil finish, checkering re-cut. Bores are excellent. Action is tight. Barrels are on face. Ejectors are strong and in time. Trigger works well. Case leather is fine, still relatively light in color with numerous bumps, scratches, and rubs. Straps and handle are good. Interior cloth is good to fine. Label is excellent. Relatively new accessories are excellent. A grouse hunters dream, this fine gun is of "golden age" quality. MGM56
