A member of the staff at the US Embassy in Riyadh provided his J. P. Sauer Drilling to Rothenburger Waffeneck Germany for custom finishing (per original invoice, totaling over 32,000 DM in 1998 (1.8 DM per US$)). 25" Barrels with pop-up rear sight were fitted with claw scope bases and scope was mounted in claw rings. Breech ends of barrels were engraved and gold inlaid. Blitz action with Greener type side safety, pin type cocking indicators, crossbolt third fastener, side clips, and gold plated double triggers (front set),was highly embellished. Ornamental sideplates were added and sides of action and sideplates were engraved and flush gold inlaid with heavy arabesque scroll and acanthus. This work surrounds interesting sylvan scenes on sides; with left side portraying satyr with noose approaching recumbent nude nymph. A stag mounts a hind in background. Right side has satyr stroking receptive nymph in foreground with stag viewing activity from background. Engraving is well cut and shaded in Bulino style. Engravers signature is at bottom of left scene. Bottom of action is near fully engraved and gold inlaid with matching large scroll which surrounds relief carved silver inlaid portrait of St. Hubertus's stag with cross between antlers. Fences and top lever have relief gold inlaid scroll and acanthus within relief silver inlaid flourishes of open scroll outlined by raised gold inlaid beads. Trigger guard is inlaid and engraved with matching scroll. New custom stocks are of striking dark marbled and burl figured European walnut, and feature fluted Tyrolean right hand cheekpiece, slight hog backed comb, extreme pistol grip with thick horn cap, and sling loops. In place of checkering, grip and forend are carved with open acanthus scroll surrounding central oval panels carved in fish scale pattern. Forend is schnabeled and has Deeley release. A Schmitt & Bender 1 - 1/2 - 6 X rail scope with three post and crosshair reticle is in claw mounts, rear with windage. Right barrel is fitted with small caliber (22 LR) auxiliary chamber. Gun and scope are housed in custom made oak case with mahogany accents lined in burgundy cloth and french fitted for action, barrels, and scope. These compartments are bordered by woven green and burgundy silk braid edging. CONDITION: Excellent, appears little used since custom finishing with only a few scattered handling marks, mostly in wood surfaces with ring marks on bottom of forend and a couple of heavy marks on left side of butt. Mechanically excellent. Scope has a few scratches in its exterior lacquer, optically clear. Case is excellent. Most certainly a striking one-of-a-kind drilling. MGM 99
