This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 10/30/2018
Offered is an early martially marked Henry rifle. No provision for sling. Early perch belly stock with no bump. Features full octagon barrel, brass frame, brass buttplate, case colored hammer and lever. Matching serial numbers on barrel, lower inside tang, upper tang channel on buttstock. Top tang inside of buttplate and buttplate screws are numbered "613". The following parts can be found in the book titled "The Henry Rifle" by Les Quick: early type slight bevel top rear frame, page 56; early small trigger retaining pin, page 63; barrel only sight dovetail; early small barrel address, page 75; large variation magazine cartridge follow with milled flat receiver slot, pages 80-81; second type stock comb, page 90; early large diameter buttstock rod hole, page 99; early style buttplate with rounded heel and large gate, page 106; early plain drilled screw holes in buttplate, page 109; later round head stock attaching screws, page 116; early contoured head buttplate attaching screws with serial numbers (not matching), page 117; "HH" stamp on right forward part of frame and "CGC" and "H" on right barrel breech (Charles G. Curtis), pages 138-139. The CGC inspector initials have been erroneously recorded to be that of Charles G. Chapman, but this is refuted in the book "US Military Arms Inspector Marks" by Daum and Pate, page 47. CONDITION: Barrel markings are razor sharp. Barrel has had some add-on finish at one time and is now basically a brown-blue. Replaced blade front sight, rear sight is missing. Brass remains untouched with a rich hue; several dings at top of frame on both sides and left side has dark areas of staining. Lever is a dark patina with finish added. Colors have darkened and patterned on hammer. All screw heads have some degree of marring, lever screw is a replacement. Perch belly walnut stock retains generous amounts of original finish but does have some heat charring on left side of wrist, right side of stock has some circular pattern roughness to finish, and minor chipping at wrist. Replaced buttplate not military marked. Missing one stock attaching screw. Fine action. Rifling is well defined with sharp edges and just minor black powder abrasion. A legitimate, original mid-Civil War martially marked Henry with a couple issues as to condition and missing parts. CORRECTION: Estimate changed.
