Samuel Smith worked circa 1850 in Barree twp in the borough of Cassville. He was a member of the Smith family of gunsmiths, which were known for there fine guns. Gun is a curly maple fullstock double rifle with full octagon rifled barrels and rifle sights on each barrel. Double set triggers with lathe turned front, controlling back action percussion locks. Brass furniture with 4 piece engraved spear point finial patchbox with "Heart" piercing. 4 inlays including an engraved silver saddle plate and "Hunters" star inlay on the cheekpiece, two flash protecting inlays(missing). Rifle was featured in a" Heritage Sampler" conducted by the Museum of Art at The Pennsylvania State University, University Park, Pa. Barrel signed in script "S. Smith" while the other is marked "Cassville". CONDITION: Wood retains 50% original dark piano finish, with no visible cracks or repairs. Metal and brass have excellent original patina. Original hardwood ramrod. Great and rare Huntingdon County rifle.
