A classic and arguably the most charismatic two barrel revolver from the Civil War, the design was continued afterwards, with reconfiguration to use cartridges. Although the cartridge guns are not as sought after as the Civil War era LeMats, they are far scarcer and only found in the most advanced collections. This particular example, a full size revolver, has features of the earlier 1877 patent, that includes a blade front sight, notch rear sight, and a rotating spacer on the hammer for use as a barrel selector. There is a lanyard ring mounted in front of the trigger guard, an ejector rod mounted on the right side of the frame extension and a screwdriver inserted into the butt. The loading gate is on the right side and the head of the mainspring retaining screw protrudes from the front strap. The top of the rifled barrel is marked "COLONEL LEMAT PATENT". Belgian proofs are marked on the front of the cylinder along with the serial number "125" that is repeated on the left side of the frame. The fitted with a smooth walnut panels secured with a single transverse screw retained by a pair of escutcheons. CONDITION: Very good with old restoration, showing superficial etching, minimal polishing under a blued surface. Grips with original varnish. Revolver barrel with bright bore and sharp rifling; shotgun barrel with light pitting. Original grips in comprable condition. If loose ejector rod is held in correct position, mechanical function is perfect.
