The next grade up from the "knockabout", the grade 14 had much more extensive checkering, fine scroll engraving and carved fences. This gun with 28" dovetailed barrels is fitted with slightly raised matted rib. Barrels are engraved with importers name and address (V L & D) on tops. Barrel flats are stamped with Belgian nitro proofs for 2 - 5/8" chambers along with "FRANCOTTE CHOKE BORE". Case hardened boxlock action with automatic safety (S inlaid in gold), crossbolt third fastener and double triggers is engraved with 80% coverage small scroll. "A. Francotte Maker & Patentee" "Liege Belgium" is on each side. Fences are carved with semi relief cattails and rushes. Trigger guard with scroll on bow has serial number on tang. Lightly figured European walnut round knob pistol grip buttstock measures 14 - 3/4" over ribbed horn buttplate. Point pattern checkering is at grip. Side panels are checkered in fancy arcaded pattern and a vacant silver oval is on toe line. Matching splinter ejector forend has Anson release. CONDITION: Fine, as partially refinished. Barrels retain over 90% of an old re-black over scattered marks with subsequent silvering and scratches. Action retains approximately 30% original color where protected, the balance silver to gray. Blue on top lever and trigger guard considerably worn, with about 50% on lever, and 30% on guard. Stocks retain nearly all of a light oil refinish with a few subsequent marks. Checkering lightly worn. Bores are excellent. Action is tight. Ejectors are strong and in time. Francotte was known for their consistent high quality. In 1926 this fine gun retailed for $200.00.
