This rifle was manufactured at Harper's Ferry Armory in 1838. It is a single shot breechloader with rifled barrel. Iron mountings, including barrel, finished in brown lacquer. Walnut stocks. This example is all original, never converted or reconverted. It is a third production, one of approximately 19,680 manufactured. Many of these rifles were converted and saw use by the Confederacy during the Civil War. The block is stamped "JH HALL / HP FERRY US 1838". CONDITION: The survival rate of original flintlock in examples in fine condition is extremely small and this one is superb. This rifle retains approximately 90% of its original smooth, brown finish. Bands are lacquered. Walnut stock is excellent or better with a few dings but extremely fine condition. Even the buttplate retains 90% of the original brown finish. The bore exhibits strong, near mint, razor sharp rifling and shiny grooves. Fine action. It is readily evident that this rifle saw very little, if any use and was probably stored for years for a state militia. It would be extremely difficult to find a nicer example of this scarce rifle in original condition and unaltered flintlock action.
