14" brass cannon barrel transitions from octagon at breech end through two bands to flared and turned muzzle. Top of rear flat is engraved "London". Birmingham proofs are on top left flat. Barrel is mounted with 13-1/2" triangular steel bayonet hinged and with locking detent at front base retained in folded position by sliding thumbpiece on breech plug iron. Chamfered lock with rebated tail features semi-waterproof pan, bridled roller frizzen (large roller on spring), serpentine cock and rear sliding safety, which engages at half cock. Lock is engraved with geometric borders and a spray of scroll on cock. "C Collett" is under pan. (No listing or dates found for "C Collett".) All furniture is of brass, including small trigger guard with nice file decoration on bow, large buttplate with broad top spur, and nicely shaped ramrod pipes holding hickory rod with horn head and worm tail. Stock of European walnut has deeply fluted comb, and square broadly spaced checkering at grip, which has punch dot decoration at the center of each diamond and along borders. Stock is pinned to barrel. There is a rack number (?) "87" on toe. CONDITION: Very good. Brass cleaned to golden glow. Sharp edges somewhat rubbed. Bayonet and lock are gray to brown patina. Stock has most of what appears to be its original finish, is sound with no noticeable repairs. Ramrod is possibly an old replacement. A very attractive, fairly early, piece. MGM 48.
