Showing carving, gold inlays, and engraving of incomparable quality. The barrel is made of Prima Kruppuchner fluid steel, which was extra quality. Proof marks are 172/28 BUG, indicating a 8.15x46R. Barrel has not been relined, which is unusual. The style of fluting is the finest. Left side of action shows a stag, three hunters, one blowing his hunting horn, and their dogs, surrounded by delicate gold inlays and engraving. Right side of action shows a hunter holding his boar spear, and six dogs attacking a ferocious boar, again surrounded by delicate gold inlays and engraving. Thumbrest is carved in the foliate style. The magnificently carved buttstock features two stags and a doe running on the right side. On left side of the stock is a panel behind the checkpiece showing what is believed to be three chamois. Bottom of action has another engraved scene with a topless Diana the Huntress with one of her dogs, surrounded by gold inlay and engraving. Forearm, held on by a key, is carved in the foliate style. Front sight is present as well as the rear, which has become bent and cracked, evidence of repair at threading. Rifles of this quality were made, normally in the late 1800's, and after 1900 are difficult to find in this magnificent standard. The top of the barrel, for the first half, features inlays in gold and what is believed to be platinum. The rest of the barrel is matted. PROVENANCE: Accompanied by a 1988 Stiegele Fagd giving information on the background of the gun. It was made for Earl Pocci of Ammerland and delivered in 1907 on the occasion of the 150 year jubilee. CONDITION: Overall condition is extraordinary for its age. Thumbrest has a crack on the right side as well as a chip missing on the right front end. Rear sight is bent and cracked requiring repair, which should not be too difficult. Truly a centerpiece for a collection of German Schuetzen rifles. TR
