The Springfield Armory produced a mere 753 examples making this a very scarce rifle to locate. It is also one of the earliest repeating bolt action rifles issued by the Armory. Cartridges were fed through a trapdoor in the buttplate. It was approved for US issue in 1882 and was invented by General J.N. Reece and R.S. Chaffee. It featured two bands, stacking and sling swivels, 1879 trapdoor style rear sight with slotless screws, and ramrod. Left side of barrel stamped with "VP" proofs. Top of frame on left rail stamped "US / SPRINGFIELD / 1884". Rear sight is unique as stamped "C-R" on left side. The stock has a perfect "SWP 1884" cartouche near the top left buttplate. There is a proof "P" stamped on bottom of stock. CONDITION: Barrel and frame retain 90% original blue just starting to drift. Stock is near new with nary a mark or blemish. The bore is like new. Also comes with a period leather sling with a single hook and two keepers. One of the nicest Chaffee-Reece rifles out there.
