Manufactured in 1876, this early Springfield Trapdoor Model 1873 Cavalry Carbine is chambered for the .45-70 Government cartridge. One piece American walnut short thick wrist stock with crisp "EAA" cartouche in small oval on left side, mounted with carbine sling bar and ring, and without slot for cleaning rod. Early solid buttplate with reinforcing lugs on interior without trap for cleaning rod. Model 1873 rifle rear sight graduated to 500 yards. Solid rifle front sight with out removable blade. Large eagle barrel proof with small "P" in front of receiver. Early barrel band with stacking swivel. Second pattern high arch trapdoor marked "US MODEL 1873". Three position tumbler and second pattern straight cut breech release. Lockplate marked with eagle and "US SPRINGFIELD 1873". Second pattern hammer checkering. Early two piece trigger guard assembly and smooth trigger. CONDITION: Very good as partially refinished. The barrel, receiver, and rear sight have been expertly refinished to give the appearance of being authentic. The stock is very fine with no refinish being evident and retaining most of its armory finish. The buttplate is likely restored and marked "LD * A" (meaning unknown). The bore is bright and shiny with sharp rifling. The chamber is pristine and has the appearance of being unfired. The breech trapdoor retains generous amounts of vivid authentic case colors. The action is crisp and properly functioning.
