Approximately 1,000 of these special carbines were made in 1886 only, most in the 325000-400000 serial number range. They were made with a 24" barrel and nearly full length walnut stock. Special features included uncapped forend, fastened by a single barrel band with wraparound type upper sling swivel; lower sling swivel on butt, sling ring and bar on left side, and Buffington Model 1884 rear sight stamped "XC" on leaf. Butt has trapdoor. The front sight has the protective hood. This carbine is 100% original and has every of the above listed features and falls in correct serial range. The lock is stamped with eagle and "US SPRINGFIELD". The left side of barrel has the "VP" proof. Block is stamped "US MODEL 1873". The left side of the stock has a faint but readable "SWP 1886" Sam Porter cartouche stamp along with a faint cursive "P" on wrist. It is purported that almost the entire production run were shipped to Cavalry units then stationed on the Western Frontier, so they would have seen hard use and a lower than average survival rate. CONDITION: Block colors have darkened with some light age spots. 80% dull arsenal blue on lock and hammer. Buttplate is grey patina. Barrel is a blue-brown patina mix with overall age spotting. Trigger guard is blue drifting and thinning with overall blue appearance. Stock is very good with small wrist repair, several bumps and bruises, and was slightly cleaned with dull oil finish. Sharp and clean, well-defined rifling with shiny lands. Fine action. A must-have scarce Trapdoor for the Springfield collector.
