One of the most popular single shot carbines of the Civil War and made by American Machine Works between 1861-1865. Features iron mountings with standard blue finish, case colored breech with walnut stocks, and a sling bar and ring mounted on left side of breech. Especially popular with Union cavalry regiments. Features a part octagon blue barrel, dovetail front sight with German nickel blade, military type folding ladder rear, fire blued barrel catch, barrel release within trigger guard. Left side has cartouche for military inspector JH for Joseph Hannis, chief inspector for the Smith carbines. Matching numbers on frame. Barrel release is brass. Single side hammer. CONDITION: Barrel is a smooth, homogeneous soft brown with touches of blue showing through with some age patches and dents on right side. Barrel catch retains approximately 75% of the bright nitre blue. Frame retains traces of case colors which is basically dull grey with some patches of dark brown patina, especially on rear receiver ring. Deep dark brown patina on trigger guard and lower tang. Screw heads retain a generous amount of blue finish. Stocks are very good with sharp cartouche, expertly repaired hairline crack on left wrist. Initials of former owner carved on right side of stock. Mirror bore and fine action. Far above average.
