Manufactured by the famous Leman Co. in Lancaster, Pennsylvania at the start of the Civil War. Common theory states these militia rifles filled contracts from the state of Pennsylvania for Civil War use. It is believed that less than 500 were ever manufactured. They came with both brass and iron mountings; this example has the far scarcer iron mountings. Barrel was finished brown. Features military style rear sight, iron patchbox, buttplate, trigger guard, hammer, barrel bands. "HE LEMAN LANCASTER PA" stamp on breech. Comes with original rod and nipple. CONDITION: Case colors on lock have basically patterned out. Barrel is a smooth, homogeneous brown patina. All legends legible to include lockplate also stamped "HE LEMAN LANCASTER PA". All iron furniture is a soft brown patina. Full length walnut stock is in extra fine condition with very few marks. Strong, clean rifled bore; mirror bright with a few minor abrasions. Fine action. This has got to be one of the finest examples of this rifle to ever surface. With the rare iron mountings and small production, this rifle is nearly impossible to find in any condition.
