For a nearly identical example of this hilt, see page 147 figure 257 S. of "Swords and Blades of the American Revolution" by George C. Neumann. This example features a straight double edged convex-faced blade with a partial 7" fuller on each side. The circa 1715 hilt is probably Scottish. It bears the thin bar construction associated with the Stirling patterns and makers such as John Allen, according to Neumann. The hilt features an "S" on each side as well as three branches with pierced panels. The conical pommel has a capstan and bands of fluting. The wooden grip has a spiraling groove and has is covered with brown leather. CONDITION: Blade has a spotted grey and brown patina with some pitting and minor losses at tip. Hilt retains an even brown patina. Grip excellent as re-wrapped with brown leather. A very nice and early example of an early basket hilt.
