Listed in Dallas, JOHN DICKSON & SON, THE ROUND ACTION GUN MAKER, as a breech loading pinfire, sold 4 March 1864. This gun has 29 - 3/4" Damascus barrels with slightly raised game rib. Barrel flats and bottoms of barrels are stamped with London black powder proofs, serial number, and "J. D. & S". Jones under lever action with bar locks having tall flat faced serpentine hammers is marked with serial number and makers initials on water table. Action and locks are scroll engraved. "JOHN DICKSON & SON" is engraved on each lockplate. Serial number is on trigger guard tang. Lightly figured European walnut straight grip buttstock measures 14 - 5/8" over steel buttplate. Point pattern checkering is at grip, and a small silver oval with vestiges of engraving is at top of grip. Small splinter forend fastens to barrels with side bolt through shaped steel escutcheons. Gun is housed in quartered oak case with central brass medallion on top. Case is lined in square patterned tan pigskin. A paper John Dickson & Son label, with view of Edinburgh as central motif, is in lid. A notation in pen on label reads "16th January 1868". Bottom compartment has partitions for a considerable array of accessories, with none present except for a good quality 3-piece ebony and brass cleaning rod. CONDITION: Fair to good. Barrels retain an old re-brown over considerable pitting. Makers line on rib illegible. Action and locks have been cleaned to pewter gray with considerable pitting on left lock. Stocks refinished, fine details lost, checkering horribly re-cut. Forend appears to have original iron, but bolt and escutcheons replaced bolt loose. Bores are surprisingly good, shiny with some scattered pitting. Action is tight. Locks are good. Exterior of case has old re-varnish. Interior very good to fine with numerous stains and rubs. Partitions are solid, partition at rear of hammers cut to accept this gun with hammers cocked. MGM155.
