For a nearly identical example see plate 120.S on page 101 of "Swords & Blades of the American Revolution" by George C. Neumann. The sword featured in the book is believed to have been Ethan Allen's dress sword. This example features a slightly curved double fullered blade with 8-1/2" clipped point. The contemporary guard of solid silver features a shell engraved on the back of the quillon and is pierced with four slots with scalloped edges. The contemporary dog head pommel or wolf head is also of solid silver and is chased with great detail. The period ivory grip is finely gadrooned. The sword was improperly made as the head has no loop for the chain. CONDITION: Good. Blade retains a dark freckled patina with a series of nicks on the edge and one nick on the spine. Silver is partially patinated and has some scattered marks. Pommel shows some faux high edge wear and a dark patina in protected areas. Grip is good with one repaired chip on the underside near the front ferrule. Grip retains darker patina in grooves and lower areas, some space around pommel cap.
