Chambered for the .50-70 Gov't cartridge with a heavy #4 weight 32 inch octagon barrel with Beach folding target front sight and Remington folding ladder sight mounted on rear of barrel. Two piece American select walnut stocks with crescent butt plate and steel forend cap. With rare factory single set target trigger. Rifle is cased in Remington partitioned case with presentation plaque inscribed "A.G McCook FROM BROTHER, SISTER AND COUSIN HARTFORD CONN. CHRISTMAS A.D. 1871". Case includes cartridges, bullets, bullet mold, priming device, and numerous other loading items and cleaning equipment. Serial number E91105 is found on both upper and lower tangs below the wood line. The assembly number 317 is found on underside of barrel, rear of forearm and foreword portion of stock mortise. Anson McCook was a prominent attorney in Steubenville Ohio at the outbreak of the Civil War. He raised a militia unit and was elected Captain. He fought in many campaigns starting with Bull Run and was promoted to Colonel and later Brevetted to General. He commanded troops in the Southern and Western fields of battle and was recognized for his gallantry. The McCook family of Ohio is known s the "FIGHTING McCOOKS" with a believed 17 members of said family fighting for the Union during the conflict. Anson McCook then moved to New York and was elected to the United States senate where he served from 1883 until 1893 becoming Secretary of the U.S. Senate. This wonderful rifle is accompanied by a brief history of the family as well as copies of the General's promotions. CONDITION: Very fine with the rifle retaining over 85% of the thinning blue finish on the barrel with balance turning plumb. The bore is excellent, bright and shiny with sharp rifling. The two piece walnut stocks are very fine with most all factory varnish remaining with no cracks or material loss. Several light bruises and minor scratches are evident from period use. The case colors have dulled to an untouched brown with visible colors on both sides. The action functions properly and locks up tight. The rare factory single set triggers function properly. The rear tang has been drilled a tang sight at some much earlier period and has a filler screw present filling the hole The case is very fine and is an untouched condition. The engraved name plaque is wonderfully patinaed and the interior has all the red wool lining in place although lightly faded and soiled from age. A unique piece of Ohio Military history.
