(ca 1904) These attractive early "Royals" have 30" dovetailed barrels with narrow swamped game ribs. Rear portions are gold inlaid "1" or "2", matching gold numerals on top levers and engraved numbers on forend iron internals denoting a true pair. Tops of barrels are engraved "Holland & Holland" "98. New Bond Street, London." and barrel flats are stamped with London nitro proofs for 2 - 1/2" chambers. Case hardened "Royal" sidelock actions without hand detachable locks (not patented until 1908), feature automatic safeties, gold band tumbler end cocking indicators, and single non-selective triggers. Actions and lockplates are engraved with exceptionally well cut classic Holland "Royal" scroll with strapwork highlights. "Holland & Holland" is in arched device on each plate. "Royal" "Hammerless" "Ejector" is on bottoms of actions, and "Patent" "Single Trigger" is on each trigger plate. Blued top levers are engraved "Patent Ejector". Blued small bow trigger guards have serial numbers on short tangs. Stocks of European walnut differ in figure and color, but are undoubtedly original. Gun "1" has relatively dark, smoky marbled European walnut, while gun "2" has flesh-toned walnut with dramatic streaks, and considerable stump figure. Stocks are straight grip, and feature diamond hands, along with standard drop points and checkering. They measure 14 - 1/4" over ribbed horn buttplates, and gold ovals engraved "R. S. H." are on toe lines. (Top of case is embossed Sir Robert Horne, named Viscount of Slamannan in 1937. He was a Scottish businessman and M.P. He was a womanizing bachelor leading to his well know nickname as a "Scots Cad".). Matching splinter ejector forends have Anson releases. Original oak and leather two gun case with brass corners, is lined in burgundy cloth, and has typical Holland dividing panel between top and gun compartment. Gold embossed black leather Holland & Holland label is in lid along with charge card with information for these particular guns. There is also a label with information regarding ejectors. Bottom compartment contains an array of original accessories including H&H marked horn handled turn screw, snap caps, and round pewter oil bottle. Other accessories include cleaning equipment consisting of mops and brushes, and a two piece ebony and brass cleaning rod with 7" handle section. CONDITION: Fine, as partially refinished. Barrels retain over 90% old best quality re-black with some loss to engraving detail, especially on ribs. Actions and locks retain approximately 40% original case hardening color, somewhat stronger on right lockplates. Top levers and trigger guards retain most of their original bright blue, and stocks retain most of what appears to be their original hand rubbed oil finish, with numerous light marks and some deeper scratches. Bores are very fine to excellent, shiny with some evidence of a few very light pings, and dent removal on left barrel of gun "2". Actions are tight. Barrels are on face, but with just a glimmer of light showing on both right barrels. Ejectors are strong and in time. Triggers appear to work well. Guns were made for a very full faced individual with top and trigger guard tangs swept to the right, as are lockplates. Guns are cast off approximately 2". Case leather has considerably darkened and has numerous scuffs and marks. Original straps and handle are good. Interior cloth is fine to very fine, quite dusty with rubs and soiling from contact with barrels over the years. Accessories are generally fine. A nicely matched, as found, pair of Royals. MGM128.
