(ca 1928) One of an estimated 22 NID guns made in this grade, this truly fine example has 30" barrels fitted with raised matted ventilated rib. Tops of barrels are engraved "Ithaca Gun Co" "Ithaca, N. Y. U. S. A." There are 1-1/2" splashes of shaded fig leaf and fig engraving at breech ends. Engine turned barrel flats are stamped with serial number, grade number, and chokes 2 and 4. Case hardened early type NID action with pin type cocking indicators features non-automatic safety, gold plated single selective trigger (selected by safety button), and typical rotary bolt. Action is engraved with near full coverage shaded fig leaves and figs with some scroll highlights surrounding multi-color inlays of birds on sides with red gold and gold ducks on left, and pheasant on right. Bottom of action has silver and gold inlaid heraldic eagle. A gold inlaid stags head is on trigger guard bow. Serial number is on tang. Very nicely crotch figured American walnut capped pistol grip buttstock measures 13 - 3/4" over black leather covered pad. Stock features broad Monte Carlo comb, fancy fleur de lis checkering pattern at grip and side panels with flourishes into butt. A vacant gold shield is on toe line. Matching short beavertail ejector forend with inset ebony tip and reinforcing screw has Deeley release. Forend iron has some engraving and is marked with serial number and grade. Gun is housed in a new good quality oak and leather case with brass corners. Interior is lined in burgundy cloth and dividers have oak tops. Case contains cleaning equipment, snap caps, and oil bottle, along with a reproduction Ithaca label. CONDITION: Excellent, almost all original. Barrels retain approximately 95% original blue with some assembly marks and sharp edge wear. Engine turning remains bright. Action retains over 90% original case hardening color with some silvering evident on sharp edges, fences, and with some lightening on bottom. Red gold inlays are considerably tarnished, and have not been cleaned. Gold inlay of eagles head on bottom is missing. Stocks retain nearly all of their original finish, perhaps with a little added oil, and some scratches on butt. Checkering is very lightly worn. Pad is relatively new. Trigger retains most of its gold. Mechanically excellent. Case is excellent, near new. As fine an example of this scarce American classic as one could hope to find. MGM138.
