This extraordinary ethnographic work of art made of exotic wood and copper wire with iron blade displays the finest possible African craftsmanship and artistry. The carving is exquisite featuring a praying god as handle, heightened with pitch. The axe is bound with braided brass and copper wire. The patination throughout is indicative of decades of careful use and cannot be duplicated by modern methods. Ritual objects of this quality routinely bring five and six figures at ethnographic auctions. The axe measures 13-1/2" long and 5-3/4" at the widest point. CONDITION: Would rate excellent for an object of this age and type.
RARE & SUPERB 19TH CENTURY OR EARLIER AFRICAN (YORUBA?) RITUAL AXE.
