Fluid steel barrels marked "JOSEPH JAKOB MAKER/1556 PASSYUNK AVE. PHILADELPHIA" with smooth extended rib with doll’s head, standing rear sight, long spear front sight, and folding moon sight. Bottom of barrels marked with crown over crossed pistols. Additional pair of 20 gauge 28" barrels with flat matted rib and not marked with any marking except for "KRUPP STEEL" on barrel flats. Case hardened border engraved boxlock action with a few foliate scroll details, double triggers, extractor, intercepting safety, cocking indicators and automatic safety. Breechface marked "ANSON & DEELEY / 1152 / BREVETTE". Finely checkered half-pistol grip stock of figured walnut with drop points and a later Pachmayr recoil pad. Finely checkered splinter forend with case hardened tip and Deeley release. Joseph Jakob was a noted gunsmith in Philadelphia who was often called the "Purdey of America". He was active from 1869 to approximately 1890 and specialized in single and double guns. CONDITION: Excellent, as partially redone. Barrels and trigger guard show approximately 98-99% of the expertly reapplied blued finish. Rifle bores show sharp, well defined rifling. Shotgun barrel show a couple small areas of light abrasions but still clean and shiny. Action shows traces of case colors. Refreshed wood shows beautiful grain, sharp checkering and a few usual handling marks. We sent this rifle to be chamber cast as the caliber was not marked: it is verified with Krupp Steel barrels, .45-70 Government cartridge, and Anson Deeley frame. We have had .45-70 stamped into the water table. The 20 gauge came to us with no markings of any kind, which means they are probable replacements or custom made; we have our gunsmith stamp in a matching serial number along with "MODIFIED CHOKE" on right barrel and "FULL CHOKE" on left barrel, "20 GAUGE 2-3/4 CHAMBER" stamped on water table for quick identification. He deemed all barrels to be Nitro proofed, therefore can be shot with modern smokeless ammunition. It is very difficult to find vintage American double rifles in popular American cartridges; and the .45-70 is one of the most popular. A beautiful set hand built by a quality gunmaker, one of the few American made double rifles from the turn of the century.
