((1882) 35 - 3/8" laminated Damascus barrels are engraved "G. E. Lewis, Treble Grip, Choke Bore, 32 & 33 Lower Loveday St. Birmingham. Honors at Paris, 1878, Medal & Diploma Sidney, 1880. ORDER OF MERIT. MELBOURNE 1881. No 6188" on concave game rib with dolls head extension. Bottoms of barrels are stamped with Birmingham black powder proofs for 9 Bore 10 Bore muzzles and "NOT FOR BALL". Nickel-plated top lever action is fitted with front spring locks with nicely sculpted serpentine rebounding hammers. Action features pivoting top bolt and double triggers. Action is engraved with 80% coverage varying sized scroll surround an oval vignette of two pheasant on bottom. Lockplates are engraved with running spaniel on left, and pointing pointer on right. "G. E. Lewis" is on scrolled ribbon at the front of each lockplate. A pointing setter is on trigger guard bow, tang extends to engraved steel grip cap. Smoky marbled, dense European walnut capped pistol grip buttstock measures 14 - 1/4" over old Silver pad. Stock features drop points, well cut point pattern checkering at grip, and a vacant silver oval on toe line. Matching splinter forend with shaped hard rubber tip attaches to barrels with sliding side bolt through shaped and engraved steel escutcheons. CONDITION: Excellent, appears to be very close to "as new", retaining nearly all of a very fine brown finish on barrels, thinned just a bit on sides, and with some scattered light marks. Action and all other metal work is nickel plated and retains essentially all of that bright plating. The only lifting found is on barrel bolt. Stocks retain nearly all of their original finish with some wear at grip and a scattering of light marks. Pad, although old, was added at a later date; rubber crystallized. Checkering is very lightly worn. Bores are excellent. Action has a touch of looseness. Barrels are very slightly off face. Locks are excellent. An attractive big bore with good dimensions. MGM196.
