John Schneider, also spelled Snyder or Snider, worked in Heidelberg Township, Lehigh County, Pennsylvania and is considered an Allemeangel school maker. The rifle features a fully octagonal barrel with sights mounted on top flat. The lock is marked "T./KETLAND/& Co." in the center. The brass furniture includes a two-piece patchbox with classic Scheider double horned finial, lid, and finial engraved with borders and large checkered shapes. Wrist escutcheon has the initials "JS" presumably for John Schneider. Flat unengraved sideplate with two piercings and terminating at the back in a point. Eight point brass star inlaid above cheekpiece and engraved with borders and design in center. Also features a brass wear plate extending between the entry ferule and front triggerguard tang. Full length figured maple stock of Allemeangel form. Complete with later replaced ramrod. Also includes associated leather-covered flask with nickle spout and nickle brass shield escutcheon engraved "J. Schneider". CONDITION: Barrel retains a brown patina with some corrosion near breech, tang possibly replaced. Lock is a professional reconversion and retains a grey patina with some lighter areas. Brass retains a mellowing patina. Stock has an added coat of finish and has a crack stemming from back of lockplate tang into wrist as well as a replaced section above the lock. Flask is in very good condition, showing some use. A very attractive rifle with slender Lehigh form.
