The 30 - 1/2" fullered blade, etched right side with large "U.S", trophies of arms, etched on left with a Civil War battle scene featuring Union troops overcoming Confederate soldiers. The brass hilt, once gilt, features an American Eagle of shield in relief and pierced design of a four leaf clover, possibly indicating ownership by an Irish officer. The pommel with a reserve silver shield and "Union" ribbon. The pommel itself inset with a large faceted stone, possibly topaz. Silver grip wrapped with triple strand braided wire. Scabbard with three mounts, cast and chased with flowers and strapwork. The leather scabbard embossed in relief with what appear to be fish. Very elaborate. CONDITION: Blade is grey but with all etching clearly visible reaching nearly 3/4 of its length. The hilt with a deep even age unpolished bronze with faint traces of original gilding in recesses. The pommel stone with no appreciable damage. The grip itself with a few extremely minor dents, unpolished. Scabbard mounts with only the faintest traces of gilding. The leather itself in remarkable good condition, slightly alligatored, but would rate excellent for a scabbard of the period. A most unusual Civil War officer's sword.
