Similar in action to the much more common Darne; guns by Charlin always seem a bit smoother, and always are a bit "special", even if of lower grade. This lower grade example has 26-3/4" dovetailed barrels fitted with deeply swamped narrow matted game rib. Barrel flats are stamped with French nitro proofs for 2-1/2" chambers along with "CHARLIN AUTOMATIQUE" and "L. C - 1". Case hardened sliding breech action has blued double eared toggle for opening deeply stamped "CHARLIN". A toggling safety is on left side. While most metal work is severely plain, fences are relief carved with clusters of dragon flies (?). Trigger guard is also blued and barrel removal button on bottom is checkered. Lightly figured European walnut capped pistol grip buttstock measures 14-1/2" over thin black rifle pad. Point pattern checkering is at grip. Forend is solidly screwed to action. CONDITION: Very fine, as partially refinished. Barrels retain nearly all of a re-black over numerous light scratches. Action retains most of its original case hardening color. Operating lever and trigger guard retain approximately 70% of their original blue. Stocks have most of an old oil refinish, checkering lightly worn. A 2" x 1-1/2" piece has been replaced at toe. Bores are fine, considerably frosted. Action is smooth and tight. MGM177.
