The flat lockplate of sear type is decorated with vertical slashes. The hammer in the form of a stylized monster. The heavy 41-1/2" barrel of hexagonal shape with flat on top of sighting and single steel foresight. Iron trigger guard and buttplate of military form. Buttplate is of nail fastened type consistent with mid-17th century form. Blackened walnut fullstock with rudimentary carving and punch decoration near breech. CONDITION: Barrel is a deep, even, aged brown with maker's stamp on left flat near breech. Lock with some staining but in extremely good condition. Flashpan appears to have all its original parts, including pivot (usually missing). Steel buttplate is a deep, even, aged brown. Trigger guard is brown stained with exfoliation characteristic of a nearly 400 year old musket. The blackened stock stamped with rack number 18 on left side of lock mortise. Forend 33" from muzzle appears to be pieced but with age and decoration consistent with a period repair. Steel tip ramrod is seized in ramrod channel. Good bore. A classic 17th century gun perfect for the colonial collector or the collector of ignition systems.
