(Circa 1885) 34" Laminated steel barrels are engraved "J & W. TOLLEY. MAKERS. NO. 1 CONDUIT St. REGENT St. LONDON. W." on slightly raised flat rib with dolls head extension. A dovetail for rear sight has been plugged. Barrel flats are stamped with Birmingham nitro re-proofs for 8 gauge, 3-1/2" chambers, 2-1/8 oz shot. Original black powder Birmingham proofs marked "NOT FOR BALL" are on bottoms of barrels. Round bodied Jones under lever action is fitted with peninsula back spring locks with chamfered serpentine rebounding hammers. Fences are very nicely filed and action is engraved with only small scroll borders. "J. & W. Tolley" is on each lockplate. Serial number is on trigger guard tang. Very nicely marbled and well figured European walnut capped pistol grip buttstock measures 14-1/2" over newer Silver type pad, mounted on original Silver pad base plate adding about 1/4" to length of pull. Grip cap is of very nicely carved sunburst pattern horn. Well cut point pattern borderless checkering is at grip. Matching splinter forend with shaped metal tip has Deeley release stamped "PATENT" on side. CONDITION: Very fine, as partially refinished. Barrels retain most of a renewed brown finish with good definition to pattern, possibly done at time of re-proof. Action and lockplates retain most perhaps as much as 70% of their original case hardening color, with some minor browning and staining. Stocks retain most of their original hand rubbed oil finish with a scattering of marks and scuffs, checkering lightly worn. There are three or four fairly deep scratches on toe line. Pad is relatively new. Bores are very fine, shiny, appear cleaned over some frosting. J & W Tolley are known for their big guns of very fine quality. This gun is no exception, and has great dimensions. MGM201.
