(A) A Model 1850 foot officers sword with U.S.M.C. marked blade. Nickel plated, slightly curved blade. The right side etched with foliate motifs, an eagle, arms motif with a shield, and epluribus Unum in a banner. Marked near ricasso "W.F. Horstman/& Sons/Philadelphia" and a kings head proof stamped on the ricasso. The spine is etched "Iron Proof". The left side of the blade has a large etched "U.S.M.C." with American flags and stands of arms. Standard Model 1850 gilt brass hilt with pierced guard. Black leather wrapped grip decorated with twisted brass wire. CONDITION: Blade retains much of period nickel finish with one area that has been corroded and and then cleaned. Hilt retains generous amounts of gilt finish. Grip is very good. (B) Model 1840 NCO sword with scabbard and frog. Straight tapered blade with single fuller on each side. Left side of blade on ricasso stamped with Horstman marks. Standard brass hilt and case brass grip. Black leather scabbard with brass mounts and buff leather frog. CONDITION: Very good. Blade retains almost all of original polish with a few minor blemishes. Hilt retains much of its original gilt finish with some edge wear. Exposed areas have turned to brown. Scabbard excellent with a few minor dents on drag with a few areas flaked on surface of leather. Frog excellent.
