Folding bowie knife with ciphered spear point blade featuring stamps of a mermaid with [TR]Y ME, a British Registry mark, a Merman with I SURPASS ALL, and part of a military officer with sword, along with a riband reading AMERICAN HUNTING KNIFE. The tang stamp reads S.C. WRAGG, 25 FURNACE HILL, SHEFFIELD, The bolsters are deeply stamped with strange looking figures that may represent the English makers' conception of Native Americans. The front scale has been replaced with nickel silver panel bordered by wiggle work engraving, the reverse scale similarly replaced including the lower bolster area as well. The front scale is engraved in script "H.H. Harman". Wragg registered this design with the British government in 1845. c. 1845-1850s. CONDITION: Locking latch appears to be a replacement and blade is slightly loose on lockup. The blade has been sharpened some, and appears to have been cleaned some time ago.
