Early bowie with clip point blade over 1/4" thick featuring sharpened false edge and decorative "Spanish notch", stamped on ricasso MANUFACTURED BY W&S BUTCHER, SHEFFIELD and on its face WARRANTED OF [THE BEST QUALITY]. The blade is finely and faintly etched on both sides with a floral design and an eagle. The S-guard and handle are made entirely of nickel silver, decoratively pierced and neatly engraved. The sheath, also of nickel silver, is stamped in high relief on both sides - a rare feature. c. 1830s. CONDITION: The blade shows little sign of use and is dark with scattered spots, uncleaned, with pitting near the ricasso. The sheath only slightly dented towards the tip, missing the frog stud. Pictured in The Antique Bowie Knife Book by Adams, Voyles, & Moss (pp.292-293).
