Original oil on canvas painted by noted Custer historian and artist Ralph Heinz of Rollins, Montana. This captures the moment that Custer sees the true size of the hostile village for the first time. Painting is beautifully executed with Custer accurately portrayed wearing his custom made woolen campaign shirt with buckskin trousers and red scarf. He is armed with two RIC British bulldog revolvers, and a Remington No. 1 sporting rifle in .50-70 cal. In a letter written years after the battle, Lt. Edward Godfrey, of K Company, 7th Cavalry, mentions that during the expedition that culminated in the Battle of the Little Big Horn, Custer was carrying "two Bulldog self-cocking, English white-handled pistols with a ring in the butt for a lanyard, a Remington rifle, octagonal barrel; a hunting knife in a beaded, fringed scabbard; and a canvas cartridge belt." This painting received notoriety when it was featured on the cover of Man-At-Arms magazine in August, 1995. The magazine is the NRA sponsored journal for the American arms collector.
