34 - 3/4" double fuller blade with gentle curve. Right side of ricasso marked "U.S. / 1865 / A.G.M", left side marked "C. Roby / W. Chelmsford / Mass". Brass guard with three branches. Leather wrapped grip decorated with single stand of braided brass wire. Accompanied by iron scabbard with two hangers, which fits the sword extremely well. Drag has been marked on front with "V I I I I", probably an assembly number. Scabbard is composite, with throat of scabbard marked "85", body marked "32". CONDITION: Blade is very fine, with some oil staining on the blade, probably from original oil. Some original polishing marks, and one nick in the blade. Brass guard has turned a pleasing dark color by means of patina. Guard has scattered marks, dents, and scratches from handling. Brass wire wrap intact. Scabbard is a deep even patina on right side, left still has generous areas of bright metal showing through patina. Drag is free of any but the most minor of door pinches. There is a very appealing solder seam running the length of the scabbard that is clearly visible. This is a pleasing, honest, 1865 cavalry saber with a fabulous blade.
