Lot consists of two knives, one a U.S. military 1917 trench knife and the other a handmade knife. (A) The U.S. Model 1917 trench knife was the first official trench knife adopted by the U.S. during WWI and was based off of preexisting trench knives already in use by the French Army. Usable only as a stabbing weapon, the Model 1917 was soon replaced by the Model 1918 trench knife, which featured a more adequate knuckle guard. This Model 1917 was manufactured by L.F. & C. and features a triangular 9" blade with a steel knuckle guard. Complete with a leather 1918 manufactured Jewell scabbard. CONDITION: Blade is in very good condition, showing loss to finish from being pulled in and out of the scabbard and small controlled areas of corrosion. Knuckle guard retains the majority of its finish with high edge wear on the spikes and loss to finish along sides of guard. Wood grip retains virtually all of its applied varnish with scattered markings all around. Scabbard is in very good condition, showing scattered handling marks and signs of aging. Metal components retain the majority of their finish with areas of loss on both the tip and base components. Brass components have begun to turn a pleasing mustard colored patina. (B) Unmarked handmade knife. Clip point blade is 5 - 1/4" long and is faceted on left side. Plain steel hand guard. Handle is made of wood and holds the blade in place with brass pins. M6 scabbard is unmarked, but has a hand carved "US ARMY" on the front. CONDITION: Blade is in good condition showing multiple indentations and light corrosion all around. Blade has small nicks to the face of the blade. Guard has grey spotting and areas turning a gun metal grey. Wood grip is in fair condition, with minor chipping on pommel and a 3 - 1/2" crack on the rear of the grip. Scabbard is in fair condition, showing aging and wear. Metal components show grey spotting and areas of light corrosion. Overall an interesting lot of U.S. and handmade knives.
