This entire lot came in its entirety from the family of Civil War veteran Nelson Stoddard of the 27th New Jersey Volunteers. It comes with a civilian Colt Model 1851, a short sword that family history reputes was brought home by Stoddard after Gettysburg, two period books including "New Jersey Troops in the Gettysburg Campaign" and "The Life of Abraham Lincoln", a bullet mold, two Bibles, two nearly full family photograph albums, dining set of cup, plate, and three utensils, and a binder full of letters, commissions, and early paperwork. There are two CDV photographs of Medal of Honor winner George Washington Mindil of the 27th New Jersey and Samuel Dennis, Captain of Company H, a copper printing block, deck of Civil War playing cards inside a folding cribbage board comprising 50 of 52 cards. The Colt was made in 1863, standard features include octagon barrel, 40% remaining naval scene on cylinder, six shot, single action. Case color frame has darkened, fine one piece walnut grips, half moon added front sight, brass trigger guard and backstrap. CONDITION: The trigger guard is slightly deformed. All metal is a clean soft patina with strong legends. All matching numbers including wedge. grips are excellent. Strong bore with some erosion. It is always historically significant when you can look into the life of an identified Civil War soldier and this collection is loaded with period pieces from the family and appropriate documents of the era.
