Consignor listed this as a John Schuler contract flintlock pistol. However, according to Flayderman 6B-050 and 6B-051, Schuler pistols do not have English Ketland & Co locks. However, pistol does have a very American looking barrel cartouche with a large P. Flayderman further states the Schuler pistol has a 9 - 5/8" round barrel and is .54 caliber with a US marked lock and barrel marked SCHULER. Present pistol is doubtless a secondary contract type pistol. Ketland lock with swan neck cock. Walnut full stock with no butt cup, simple brass furniture. CONDITION: Lock is stained, but no pitting to speak of. Barrel has staining throughout. Stock has been cracked through underneath lock and repaired with two screws and one nail. Further cracking from trigger guard to ramrod channel, from which a chunk is missing. More repairs on left side with nails and pins. Stock has a coat of varnish. Lock works well. Bore is fair. An interesting pistol worthy of further research. From the Robert Sadler Collection.
