Lot consists of: US two sabers, one with scabbard, one with partial scabbard. (A) 1840 style cavalry officer's saber. No markings, but likely Sauerbier of New Jersey with downturned pommel and unstopped fuller. 1850 style brass mounted iron scabbard. CONDITION: Sword is good. Hilt has a few traces of gilt in recesses. Leather wrap and wire are in place. Leather pad below guard replaced. Blade with good edge and point. Grey mixed with dark grey. Etching not visible. Scabbard is broken at bottom. Throat and upper mounts with rings present. Drag is gone. Finish is crusty brown. Mounts show good detail. (B) Bone grip, reverse 'P' hilt saber, circa 1795-1815. Inscribed on the upper mount "Lt. Lyman." Grooved, bird's head pommel. Single edge blade widens slightly toward tip. Gilt brass mounted black leather scabbard. CONDITION: Hilt preserves traces of gilt, perhaps ten percent. Hilt has slight wobble. Tang slight roughness. May have been repeened to tighten. Chipping to bone grip just under the pommel at top and either side. Wire in place. Blade was blued for about 12". Blue shows dark. Two drypoint etched floral sections on each side. Obverse with panoply of arms between, featuring Greco-Roman helmet and shield with face. Reverse with dragoon flying toward the sun. Traces of gold wash on geometric panels under langets and first floral panel on reverse. The dragon motif on the second sword opens up the possibility of its being intended for British market, but the motifs may be generic. No maker or dealer name is visible. Scabbard is very good. Top mount slides a bit and has rubbed the finish. Crackling, crazing and finish loss overall, but good color and solid. Rubbing to gilt on brass mounts. SR
