Less than 200 pistols of this model were manufactured by Deringer with deep seven-groove rifling. This was the first government contract pistol ever made with a rifled bore. Round rifled steel barrel with generous traces of brown finish and small brass front sight and notched rear sight. Flat internal mechanism percussion lockplate, deeply stamped "US/DERINGER/PHILADELA" in center. Standard brass Model 1842 Navy furniture includes round buttcap with screw in center, plain trigger guard, and barrel band. Steel swivel-type ramrod. Plain walnut half stock with flat grip. CONDITION: Barrel retains generous amounts of original brown finish, with some areas thinned to grey patina with some minor dark spotting. Some light corrosion around bolster, rifling is very good. Lock markings are excellent and lock retains a grey patina. Brass retains a mellow patina. Stock very good with a few light storage marks and a small hairline crack at tail of lockplate. This is an excellent example of the first rifled martial pistol and rarest of the Model 1842 Navy Box Lock pistols. DG
