Easily distinguishable from the Navy for its lack of screwed-in leather cover, the Army Type lacks both the screws and screw holes that were used in attaching the covering. This example is sans saddle ring. It is estimated that approximately 500 were made, 200 of which were ordered by the Army in 1865, making it one of the rarer Civil War carbines. Features round barrel, dovetailed front sight, adjustable long range rear sight, brass buttplate, rear butt sling swivel. Left side of barrel is stamped "SHARPS PATENT 1859". Right side is stamped "SHARPS & HANKINS PHILADELPHIA". CONDITION: Barrel is a pleasing blue-brown homogeneous patina. Frame and lever is a smooth grey-brown patina. Walnut buttstock is excellent with no cracks, just some minor handling marks. Frame exhibits a couple of marred screws. Extremely clean, well defined and sharp bore. Although purchased by the US Army late in the war, the total production was so low that finding any example of this carbine would be a difficult task, and finding one this clean might take years before you see another such example.
