Lot consists of: two early nineteenth century American canteens. (A) Large iron banded wood canteen, 10" diameter, 5" width. Two sling brackets with large openings for a rope. Typical of large canteens stored in wagons. CONDITION: Very good. Shrinkage gaps to heavy slats as is natural. Raised edge around bunghole slat about half there, the remainder chipped off in old damage. Some age roughness to iron bands. Overall aged, light brown tone. (B) Keg style. Lathe turned ends with incised lines. Long slats secured by four rivet-fastened iron bands. 7-1/4" long; 4" diameter at ends, about 5" at midpoint exclusive of raised bung. CONDITION: Very good. Stopper missing. Holes drilled through raised bung block for carrying handles now missing. Good surface to blackened iron bands. Good color to wood. Minor surface scrapes and dings. A nice pair of American canteens showing honest period use. (SR)
