This high quality sword is English made for the American market and closely follows the British Pattern 1796 saber. The single edged slightly curved blade has a wide shallow fuller on each side. Both sides are decorated with long shaped panels of blue with gold washed engraved designs. The right side features a Federal eagle with an "E. PRURIBUS UNUM" banner in its beak, cannons, flags, and foliate scrolls. Ricasso stamped "G" for Gill and also inscribed "Warranted". The other side shows stands of arms, a liberty cap, and floral motifs. The iron reverse P hilt has languettes and a faceted knucklebow. Bird head pommel with a leather wrapped grip decorated with twisted steel wire. Complete with its original iron scabbard with portion of leather hanger still attached. CONDITION: Blade retains about 60-70% bright blue, gilt and polished surfaces with some minor thinning, frosting, and flaking. Hilt retains a grey patina with a few areas of minor pitting and languette on right side removed or broken during period of use. Grip excellent with minor scuffing. Scabbard cleaned to a grey patina with some scattered darker spots and minor dents. An attractive War of 1812 period saber. DMG. PROVENANCE: From the Collection of George M. Rapport.
