American spadroon marketed by Davis and Brown of Boston. White bone grip, gilt brass hilt with urn pommel, faced with four inset panels with bellflowers, high capstan, knuckleguard with three loops with standing flowers at the joints on either side. 14-1/2" blued panels on either side of the blade. On obverse a small illegible blade stamp at base of blade. Davis and Brown in scroll over oval with "Warranted" and "Boston" above the ricasso on a leaf background. American eagle with 15 stars overhead above and foliate scroll. Reverse with 'G' stamp for Gill as blade maker, with three floral and one panoply of arms, drypoint etched and gilt washed. Good edge and point. Bright metal mixed with dark grey above the blue, but grey mixing with upper end of blue as well. Davis and Brown were active in the military goods business in Boston from about 1802-1820. CONDITION: A pretty sword despite the grey on the blade. Hilt has lots of gilt. Very slight play to the urn pommel. Reeded grip is stable but has lengthwise narrow crack on reverse. No blade pad. Gilt mounts show rubbing. About 50% gilt remains. Scabbard rings in place. Upper mount does not show trace of stud, but likely had one. Black leather scabbard with scattered finish loss. Good color, but broken about 8" above the drag and crudely repaired with black tape. Drag likely replaced. Upper edge design does not match other mounts and shows signs of silver wash. Other mounts are clearly gilt. SR. PROVENANCE: From the Collection of George M. Rapport.
