These are extremely hard to find original cartridges for the Confederate Morse breech-loading carbines made in Greenville, South Carolina during the Civil War. They both appear to be completely original, with original heads and primers. One is mounted in a Riker tray, with a green foam background which has deteriorated over time, and some of the foam is stuck to the cartridge case. The other is in a small cardboard box which has a handwritten label affixed to the lid reading "MORSE CARBINE CARTRIDGE/ MFD. IN GREENVILLE, SOUTH CAROLINA./ FOUND AT PENDELTON, SOUTH CAROLINA./ THIS IS THE ACTUAL CARTRIDGE AS/ SHOWN ON PAGE. 147 BOOK. CONFEDERATE/ LONGARMS & PISTOLS. BY HILL & ANTHONY". A careful study of the cartridge pictured in the book reveals that this is indeed the same one. These cartridges in original condition are much harder to find than the guns. PROVENANCE: Dr. John Murphy, Confederate Longarms And Pistols by Richard Hill & William Anthony 1978. CONDITION: Both retain a pleasing patina to the brass casings. The heads have some light dings and scratches in the lead, with some corrosion to the cartridge in the cardboard box. GR
