Very fine Japanese Type 89 grenade discharger with matching numbered external parts, and internals numbered “194”. Trigger slot dust cover springs intact and serviceable without canvas cover present. The Type 89 grenade discharger was a mainstay of the Japanese platoon during WW2 and was a highly portable and effective weapon. It was as often used as an impromptu direct fire weapon as an indirect fire weapon. Americans coined the phrase "Knee Mortar" due to the curved baseplate, however utilizing this weapon against the leg would result in grievous injury to the leg. The range is adjustable by turning a knurled adjustment knob at the right side. Many American soldiers wished the United States had provided something similar to them. U.S. soldiers took to using our own 60mm mortar in a like manner even though the nature of the base was less than ideal for this employment. CONDITION: Overall appearance and finish is extremely fine original lustrous blue finish turning a pleasing brown patina with some scattered oxidization. Mechanics are fine. Bore is very fine, as is face of firing pin head. A fine well-made World War II souvenir suitable for any discerning collector. THIS IS A NATIONAL FIREARMS ACT ITEM AND REQUIRES BATF APPROVAL PRIOR TO TRANSFER. THIS ITEM IS FULLY TRANSFERABLE ON AN ATF FORM 3 OR 4 AS A DESTRUCTIVE DEVICE. JWK 2019-10-62
