Lot consists of: (A) Utah Indian War Veteran Medal, reverse marked "Presented By The State of Utah To " and stamped "Return Jackson Redden". Return Jackson Redden (1817-1891) reportedly was the first of the advance party of Mormon pioneers to view the Great Salt Lake Valley on July 23rd, 1847. Born in Portage County Ohio in 1817, Return Jackson became interested in the Mormon religion in 1843 and shortly afterwards was baptized a member in the Ohio River. He moved to Nauvoo, Illinois, where he was closely associated with the Prophet Joseph Smith, serving as one of his body guards, until Smith was killed in June 1844. Forced out of Nauvoo in February 1846, ending up at the encampment known as Winter Quarters at North Omaha Nebraska. While at Winter Quarters, Return Jackson was asked to be in Brigham Young’s Vanguard Company. He staked and laid out the overland route from Salt Lake City to California, served in the Black Hawk Wars, was the Justice of the Peace for Tooele and Summit Counties Utah and served as a U.S. Deputy Marshal. (B) Utah Indian Wars Veterans' Association Ribbon. CONDITION: Both medal and ribbon are in excellent condition.
